How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets

So, your ugly kitchen needs a face-lift!A metal storage cabinet can be a great way to store a number of items in the household, in offices and other commercial premises. They can be used to store utensils, books, files and much more. The type of cabinet that you choose will depend upon what you are using it for.

Perhaps the most popular setting for a cabinet is in the office. Some of the metal containers used may be cabinets, racks and filing cabinets. These are great for managing paper, and increasingly common nowadays are solutions designed to effectively store multimedia items. This could include compact disks, external hard drives or an entire backup server. Using this kind of storage is a great way to save space both in the office and at home.

Cabinets come in a variety of sizes, and there are many compact varieties that can make use of even the smallest of places. They often come in a wide variety of heights to ensure that the exact measurements can be catered for. Some cabinets will also have the ability to add on more modules, if required to add extra space. Make sure you measure the space carefully as metal cabinets are very hard to cut down to size!

When it comes to storing specific utensils, a metal storage cabinet can be fitted with shelving and hooks so that items such as kitchen supplies, books and other household items can each have their proper place. Metal is the most protective of the materials that cabinets are made from, although cabinets made out of glass or wood may be appropriate depending on the decor of your home/ office.

It’s ok, kitchens age. If you feel your kitchen is stuck in a time warp and is holding your soul prisoner to it’s outdated, worn, drab feng-shui…fret not. We have more selection available to us than we’ve ever had in the history of kitchens.

The choices for kitchen cabinets in Toronto and the rest of North America in general are simply mind blowing (yay Capitalism). Where do you start?

First things first, how much space do you have in your kitchen? Are you willing to knock a wall or two down to increase the space? How will that affect the adjoining rooms?

Once you’ve made up your mind about the space you need, the kitchen cabinets are the next item to consider. They are the focal point of the room, the most functional element of the kitchen and basically the “thing” that every other item of your kitchen “wraps around”.

What you choose will either make or break the deal.

There’s really 3 choices at your disposal:

#1- If budget is the main criteria, drop by IKEA, Lowes, Rona and Home Depot. Cabinets are sold in individual pieces, stock measurements and you can mix-and-match with enough variety to get you from A to B for the most economically sensible option. Downside being, you’re limited in the selection. Box frames are laminated, and your only “upgrade” is usually solid doors. Don’t kid yourself, new cabinets are new cabinets and even with this option you can make a dramatic upgrade to your kitchen so if you have a tight budget you still have options.

#2 – Budget is still a criteria, but you just got a bonus at work:). GREAT! Now your options have multiplied umpteen times (I love “Umpteen”…no math involved). There are a plethora of manufacturers out there that sell stock cabinets using “good” quality materials with enough “upgrade” options to give your kitchen the 100k look, without the 100k price tag. Crown molding, faux pillars, architectural trim, panelling, higher grade hinges/closers, and on and on when cleverly designed can make your new kitchen the subject of envy of all of your friends and neighbours. Consider option 2 as the “gates to the field” have opened up for you. Enjoy the bounty that awaits you in available options.

#3 – Custom Cabinetry…Who are we kidding, when is budget NOT a criteria? But say you just got a bonus at work… Consider this as the gates to HEAVEN opening up for you. The sky is the limit because now we’re talking custom. Not peasant like restrictions of stock measurements/materials (I kid). You can get any material, in any dimension, with custom trim and the highest grade hinges, pulls, closers, shelves, etc. We’re talking hand cut joinery where a single cabinet door can be 10+ pieces individually cut/joined. We’re talking a truly ONE OF A KIND kind of kitchen. NOBODY else in the world will have the exact same kitchen cabinets as you…pfft…friends and neighbours who?

If you’re in the Option 3 category, you need a designer and you need a custom cabinet maker. I’m not going to lie to you, a lot of people claim to be custom cabinet makers. Sure, if custom kitchen cabinets means your cabinets come out looking like 50 other people’s cabinets…not so custom. For a truly unique design, you need a master cabinet maker at your disposal so bypass the showrooms and the big outfits.

There are a lot of custom kitchen cabinet makers, so make sure you look around and try to find a smaller shop with lower overhead. Big outfits function off of production, which means templates and a range of selections that are often recycled and reused. Find the small outfits…That’s where you tend to find better deals and the true “Custom” experience.

Whatever option you choose, planning is key. This is something you don’t want to rush into. An intelligent decision based off budget, layout, material selection and choosing the right supplier can add a great amount of value to your home. Cabinets are undeniably the most important element of any kitchen. Best of luck, may the cabinets you choose bring you years of functional and aesthetic pleasure.

How to Build a Corner Cabinet – The Basics to Put Together Your Own Beautiful Cabinet in Your Home

If you want to keep your house organized and well decorated, you are going to want to build a cabinet for your home. Cabinets will keep things in order and make your home look neatly put together.

Most people want to know how to build a corner cabinet so they can maximize the space they have by storing the items they have. Even if you’re not an expert woodworking individual, you can still put together a great looking corner cabinet with the right tools, materials, and instructions.

If you want to know how to build a corner cabinet, the first step you need to make is determine the dimensions of your corner cabinet and how large you want it to be. Take the measurements of the dimension of the corner that you plan to place the cabinet. You should bring these measurements with you when you go to shop for your wood.

When you go to buy the wood you should have an idea of how much wood you’re going to require. For the average corner cabinet you are going to need a square of wood to be cut in half to make the top and base, two rectangles that measure the side of the square by the desired height, and an extra square for each two shelves.

To get the wood you require you can go to a lumber yard. While out buying the wood you need, you should also get other supplies you need such as paint, nails, and screws.

Once you have the wood you require you will have to measure and cut every piece of wood to make a top, bottom, and two sides. Make the necessary measurements and cut shelves the same size as the top and bottom of the cabinet.

Now attach the sides, top, and bottom. You will then attach the shelves and paint or stain the wood to your desired style. This is the basics to build your own corner cabinet. Of course, let your individual style shine through and create your cabinet to fit your preference.

How to Choose

Don’t plan on cutting corners when it comes to improving your kitchen. Since your kitchen is most likely the room in your home where you and your family are the most you want to make it look as nice as possible. Many people have always dreamed about remaking their kitchen but they can never seem to afford it in their budget. But if you create a plan and do a little bit at a time this daunting task can be a work in progress over the course of a few years. This doesn’t mean that your kitchen will be in shambles for years upon end but doing little improvements in short amounts of time helps break up the costs of remodeling the kitchen. Let’s start with the cabinets and drawers and assessing if we need to replace them or maybe just reface them.

Cabinets and drawers provide most of the look for your kitchen. The type of cabinet can change the whole mood and look of a kitchen. A white laminate cupboard will provide a brighter not as expensive look compared to a solid wood or even a stainless steel cupboard which creates the modern, slightly more regal look in the kitchen. As long as you like the general layout of your cabinets and cupboards than you won’t have to replace them completely but just do some refacing; this means refinishing or repainting your existing cupboards and drawers or putting new fronts onto all the surface areas of them.

If you like the current look of your cabinets and there aren’t any large nicks or dents than repainting the surface of your cabinets may be all you need to do to create the new look. If you find some dents in your cabinets than you can find materials to resurface your cabinet which will then allow you to repaint on top of that creating a brand new look.

As you repaint your cabinet you will first have to sand down the current finish or paint that’s on the cabinet. When you have sanded it down you will most likely have to use a paint primer before you put the actually coat of paint on the cabinet. If this is your first time refacing a cabinet you may want to consult with a professional before you make any attempts and create a bigger problem than you started with.

Cabinet refacing can be a great way to improve the look upon your home. Cabinets are built to last a long time which is why they can be so expensive. Which means that your cabinets are problem still in good condition they just may need a little face lift.
